This is because the barrel training methods are done with the focus being on the most natural movement patterns while developing the greatest body awareness and balance. The majority of the Barrel training is done in the standing position with a few drills being done on your knees. These exercises focus on pushing pulling and rotational exercises putting force into the ground which activates the entire body from head to toe. The trainee not only pushes, pulls and does rotation movements but the trainee must also deal with the barrels trying to push and pull against them which will in return develop tremendous strength and power while developing great body awareness and balance.

For example, lets look at an NFL lineman and how he must pus and pull against his opponent is pushing and pulling against him. The lineman must create tremendous force while staying balanced at all times.
Now lets think how most people train for the game of football which is usually Olympic lifting and power lifting. Although these two methods do develop power and structural strength in general. However Olympic lifting goes up and overhead while powerlifting either goes up while squatting is pulling off the floor while deadlifting. Neither of these methods move in the way that the football player would move.
On the other hand the barrel training creates movement patterns actually the way the football would not only move but also how the football player has to deal with force exerted against them. Of course everyone is not a football player or perhaps even interested in the game of football but this example is easy to see by anyone who has ever played or even watched the game of football.
The barrel training in a nutshell will teach anyone whether athlete, fitness buff, personal trainer or client how to gain strength and power while developing body awareness and balance. The results will transfer greatly to sport or training but also will teach and develop great injury prevention for doing simple activities. I have truly found that the barrel training will develop the strongest core imaginable while actually training the core with natural every day movements.

Let’s look once again at the NFL lineman if he was training on Olympic lifting and power lifting movements to gain strength and power. He would develop these two attributes but much o his gains would not transfer to his sport because the movements patterns are entirely different. However, with the barrel training he would develop great strength and power which would totally transfer to his sport because the movement patterns are basically the same. With this being said the movement patterns you will learn in Brookfield’s Barrel training will transfer to your sport or battlefield but also to your daily activities. Should we not train in the manner we will actually move? Of course we should and now you have a method to learn and apply this!!

Where do I buy Barrels?
We are currently exploring options with a national supplier to get the barrels efficiently shipped around the country. In the meantime, our instructors and other gyms have simply searched for pickle and/or olive barrels for sale in their area.
What kind of barrels do you use?
As mentioned above, we use 55 gallon pickle/olive barrels. These are relatively short, stocky barrels that allow the average athlete to get in a good athletic position during their training.
What do I fill them with?
John uses water or sand in his barrels. Water shifts back and forth during the movements, which forces people to react and adjust as the water changes. Similar to a slosh pipe, if you’ve experienced this type of work. Sand is used for max strength and power development. The sand is much heavier than water, but does not move and shift like the water does, inside the barrel. This allows you to use heavier loads and a variety of other movements. Both are incredibly beneficial for developing body awareness, control, strength and power.
I can honestly say that the Barrel training strengthened my entire body more than anything else I have ever done.
